Free Parking Restaurants
in University District Seattle
Finding parking in the U-District can feel like a competitive sport. Here are the restaurants that come with their own lot — and the local tricks for stress-free parking near campus.
Let's be honest: parking in Seattle's University District is a nightmare. Between the two-hour meter limits on The Ave, the aggressive tow trucks near campus, and the UW permit-only zones that seem to multiply every quarter, finding a spot near a restaurant can take longer than actually eating the meal.
If you're driving to the U-District for dinner — especially on a weekend — you know the drill. Circle the blocks around University Way. Pray for a spot on Brooklyn. Consider just giving up and taking the light rail. But what if you didn't have to play that game at all?
Here's a look at U-District restaurants that actually offer free parking, plus some genuinely useful tips for parking in the neighborhood without losing your mind (or getting a ticket).
Restaurants with Free Parking
The honest truth is that very few U-District restaurants have dedicated parking lots. Most spots on The Ave and surrounding streets are older buildings with zero off-street parking. But a handful of places do have their own lots, and they're worth knowing about.
Slurp Station Aburasoba
4701 Brooklyn Ave NE — This is the one that locals talk about. Slurp Station has a dedicated parking lot right at the restaurant, which is practically unheard-of in the U-District. You pull up, park, walk in, and eat Seattle's only aburasoba (brothless ramen) without ever feeding a meter. The lot is small but it's free, and it's a genuine reason people drive here from Ravenna, Green Lake, and even Bellevue. Open daily until 9 PM, with online ordering available until 8:30 PM.
Portage Bay Cafe
4130 Roosevelt Way NE — The popular brunch spot on Roosevelt has a small lot behind the building. It fills up fast on weekend mornings, but if you're there on a weekday, you'll usually find a space. Worth noting: their lot is shared with adjacent businesses, so be mindful of the posted signs.
Pagliacci Pizza
4529 University Way NE — Pagliacci itself doesn't have a lot, but the University Village shopping center location (nearby at 2673 NE University Village St) does have a massive free parking garage. If you're willing to walk a few blocks or drive to the Village location, parking is a non-issue.
U Village Restaurants
Technically just east of the U-District core, University Village is the cheat code that many locals use. The entire shopping center has free covered parking, and it's home to Din Tai Fung, Ma'ono, and Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. It's not "The Ave" dining, but it solves the parking problem entirely.
U-District Parking Tips That Actually Work
If you're headed to a restaurant that doesn't have its own lot, here are the strategies that actually work — not the generic "arrive early" advice you'll find elsewhere.
Free Street Parking After 6 PM
This is the big one. Most metered spots in the U-District are free after 6 PM and all day on Sundays. If you're going out for dinner, time your arrival for just after six and you can park on University Way, Brooklyn Ave, or the side streets without paying a cent. The meters on The Ave (University Way NE) between NE 41st and NE 50th are the ones to target.
The Brooklyn Avenue Garage
The city garage at 4334 Brooklyn Ave NE (under the light rail station) charges hourly rates, but it's reliable and covered. If you're doing a quick dinner, you're looking at a few dollars — worth it compared to circling for twenty minutes. Evenings and weekends tend to have plenty of availability.
Take the Light Rail
The U District Station on Link Light Rail is right at Brooklyn Ave NE and NE 43rd St — basically the center of the restaurant district. If you live anywhere along the light rail line, this is genuinely the easiest option. No parking, no meters, no stress. The station is a two-minute walk from most Ave restaurants and about five minutes from Slurp Station on Brooklyn Ave.
Side Streets East of 15th Ave NE
Most people circle The Ave and Brooklyn, but the residential streets east of 15th Ave NE — like 16th, 17th, and 18th — often have unrestricted parking. It's a 5-10 minute walk to the restaurants, but if you don't mind the stroll, you'll almost always find a spot. Just check for zone restrictions near fraternity and sorority row.
The secret that every UW student figures out eventually: Brooklyn Ave between 45th and 50th after 6 PM. Free meters, less traffic than The Ave, and you're one block from everything.
Why Parking Matters More Than You Think
Here's something restaurant owners in the U-District know but rarely say out loud: parking kills business. There are incredible restaurants on The Ave that people skip simply because they don't want to deal with finding a spot. It's especially true for the dinner crowd driving in from other neighborhoods — families from Wedgwood, couples from Wallingford, anyone who isn't already walking distance from campus.
That's one of the reasons we chose our location on Brooklyn Ave with a dedicated lot. We wanted people from across Seattle to be able to come try aburasoba without the parking tax that usually comes with eating in a college neighborhood. Whether you're grabbing a quick bowl of our Salt-Based Aburasoba or taking your time with the Tokyo Ganso (the Parmesan one — trust us), the last thing you should be thinking about is a parking meter.
The U-District is changing fast. New apartment buildings, the light rail station, more restaurants every year. But until they build more parking (don't hold your breath), knowing where to park for free is genuinely useful local knowledge. Save this guide, share it with your friends who always complain about U-District parking, and next time you're craving something in the neighborhood, you'll know exactly where to go.
Free Parking & Great Ramen
Slurp Station is one of the few U-District restaurants with its own dedicated parking lot — right at 4701 Brooklyn Ave NE. Come try Seattle's only aburasoba, park free, and skip the meter game entirely. We're open daily, 11 AM to 9 PM.
