Last Chance:
Seattle's Cherry Blossoms Are Still Blooming
The UW Quad's 90-year-old Yoshino trees are still going as of today — but the window closes any day now. Here's what you need to know, and everything worth doing in Seattle this week.
If you've been meaning to catch the cherry blossoms at the UW Quad — go this week. Seriously, stop reading this and put it in your calendar right now.
Here's the thing: the blossoms peaked around March 20, which is already late. But thanks to Seattle's cool, gray spring (classic), those 90-year-old Yoshino trees are still going. As of April 1, the UW website is calling it peak bloom. That almost never happens this far into the season.
The window? Roughly April 1–7. Maybe a few days more if the weather stays gentle. But one good rainstorm or a breezy afternoon and it's over — petals down, season done. That's just how it works.
Which, Honestly, Is Kind of the Point
There's a Japanese concept called hanafubuki (花吹雪) — "petal blizzard." It's what happens when the wind picks up and the blossoms start to fall in swirling clouds. It sounds like destruction, but it's actually one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see.
The Japanese philosophy mono no aware captures why: beauty hits hardest precisely because it doesn't last. The falling IS the beauty. The ending IS the point.
So if you go and the petals are just starting to drop? You're not too late. You're right on time.
